Psychotropic Deprescribing in the Geriatric Population: A Review

Background: Potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) is defined as the usage of a for which risks surpass perceived benefits, particularly when more efficient alternatives exist. The focus has now shifted from prescribing to deprescribing, especially with one aging. Methods: Based on Scale Assessment Narrative Review Articles (SANRA) criteria, we performed search articles published in Medline and google scholar databases between 2008 2022 using terms such Deprescribing, Psychogeriatric patients, polypharmacy, psychotropic drugs, benzodiazepines, potentially (PIM). initial yielded 3058 articles. After review, 53 were included discussion. Discussion: Polypharmacy multimorbidity are multifaceted interconnected concepts geriatric care that call timely intervention interdisciplinary management across each healthcare social setting. And although literature studies benefits variable, deprescribing appears be overall efficacious. Conclusion: Further research efficacy strategies existing guidelines lowering PIMs psychiatry patients warranted. purpose this review give an outline current evidence inform effective methods older persons, emphasis clinicians can use address challenges these approaches
